Each class has a rainbow display (Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, and Violet) 6 bands for 6 half terms.
Children can move up to the next band on the rainbow if they have completed 20 or more reads at home over the half term (6 or 7 weeks). The weekly expectation is 4 reads a week. But putting this at 20 makes it more accessible for most children.
At the end of each half term, count the reads and there will be celebration for those children that have got 20 or more, they move up a band and are given a reading sticker. Children that have not got 20 reads continue on their current band and move up when they reach 20. They will be given a sticker at that point.
At the end of the year children who are on the top of the rainbow (red) and have got 20 reads on this band get a Reading badge colour coded to their year group. If they complete the reading rainbow every year that they are at school and have all 7 badges in year 6 they will be GPS Reading Royalty. (Prize etc. to be decided).
The focus of home reading will move to engaging children and families as readers. The skills of reading will be taught at school to allow children to enjoy wider reading with their families and peers.

These children are still included in the Reading Rainbow incentive and their reads will be counted from the Reading Record.
